The CRTC bans music or reading with foul language or obscene descriptions. Until recently this is not limited to broadcast, but technically to all telecommunications including private telephone conversations. When a complaint is made about an offense the CRTC may do nothing, prosecute, or take the license from any offending broadcaster. They usually do nothing, but the ruling with its severe punishment which can shut any broadcaster down is an important tool of intimidation. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (a crown corporation) in particular has taken a strong stance against censorship, and defies CRTC rules regularly.
