There are four key pieces of censorship Legislation in Canada. The first is our Obscenity Law which is part of our criminal code. The second is the Butler Decision, which recently gave censorship enforcement agencies even more sweeping powers. The third is Canada Customs Departmental Memorandum D9-1-1, which sets out in detail what material may not enter Canada because it is deemed obscene. And the forth is the new child pornography law. It is important to note that the effects of these laws are additive; material not deemed obscene under one law does not make it immune to the others.
